Helping those that cannot help themselves

Gracie Where do I start about our Gracie,we love this dog so much & I do believe she is smartest dog I have ever had . Her tricks we have taught her include giving you a high five, sits, lays down just about anything for Pup-peroni & if you say the word her ears perk up. Never think you get to old to give love to a pet because they don't care as long as you love them back. Gracie  is such a pleasure & has added so much joy to our home, everyone should adopt a Pet like a Pom-- I want another one but my husband loves this so much he says no because Gracie might get jealous!

Thought I would give you an update on the assimilation of Cappy.

I think he is doing remarkably well.   He's bonding very fast, is playful and joyful to see us.   And very puppy like.  I
sometimes think, he may be even a little younger than 2.    I weighed him.  8.2 #'s.   His appetite is good.
I can see how smart he is.  Has already figured out some routines etc.   Cautious but not afraid of  Patches, the cat.  She is 5 y/o, weighs 13 1/2 #'s and a rescue survivor herself. Am now working on his sitting, off, (from jumping up), he will pull on the pants leg to prevent you from walking away. And leash work.   It's really not fair that he is soooooooooooo adorable.   When we step out into the solarium, he stands fully upright and does the Schip pattycake thing.   As you know, will be a lap dog, but not needy and will jump down after awhile to play with his toys and check things out.

I am not seeing any problems with his history of abuse...  emotionally, psychologically, mentally seems to be real good.  His adaptation to here is rapid and he's making it his territory already.   To sum up, we are very pleased with him.   And I know I have a long road to haul on his training.   Schips aren't the easiest as you know. But am sure he'll do just fine.

Will keep you abreast of progress as time goes on.   Ya'll did a good job on socializing him.   I am continuing to do that.

In Memory of Marty "Boofer"  1994- May 13, 2009

Marty’s story began with us in 2003.  I had just graduated from seminary when I received a call from a Humane Society asking if my rescue, Recycled Pomeranian and Schipperke Rescue, had room for an older, toothless, midget of a pom.  Of course, I said yes.  I still remember anxiously awaiting his arrival!  And then I saw him.  He was so pitiful.  Marty was about 3 pounds—skin and bones, and basically hairless.  I thought then, I am not sure that he will be around long—he was in such poor shape.  Marty’s story was that his owner had died, and one of the adult children had taken him in (sort of).  They had been keeping this tiny dog in their backyard with a larger dog.  Poor Marty was not getting any of the food.  He could not fend for himself.  I took Marty home, and began to try to fatten him up.  I also took him to the vet to get him checked out.  We started him on Thyroid medicine and gave him high quality holistic food and supplements.  Within six months, Marty had a glorious coat of hair, and his true personality was beginning to shine.  We nicknamed Marty, Boof –or the Boofer-because he did not bark—he boofed.  Marty would exert so much energy in boofing that his little front feet would come up off the floor every time he boofed.  And Marty was and is a character!  He loves people. . .  and thinks that everyone should know who he is and fawn all over him.  When I started taking him to Petsmart, he became known to the employees.  After they knew him, I would swear that he looked around as soon as we entered the doors to Petsmart, looking for his entourage. Initially, I had planned on finding an adoptive home for this special boy.  But after several potential adopters asked me if Marty could be trained to keep his tongue in his mouth—as it hangs out because he does not have any teeth to hold it in—I decided Marty needed to stay with me.  Of course, my husband and I were already quiet smitten with him. Boofer, the Boof, or Marty—will always have a special place in my heart.  I cannot imagine what the last 6 years would have been like without his loving and humorous presence in my life. Many times people are reluctant to adopt an older dog.  I can tell you from personal experience with several dogs that I have adopted as seniors—I would not go back and change a thing.  Yes, you may have them with you are shorter period of time, but the days that you spend with a senior are golden! Thank you Marty-Boof for coming into my life.  I will always love you!  You are my fur angel here on earth.  I love you Boofer!!!

My family adopted a funny, furry little guy from you on July 1, 2008 – so it’s almost our one year anniversary! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and all the other wonderful volunteers at Recycled Poms & Schipperkes for helping us find Brewer (formerly Buster).  He is a joy and we love him so much!  The kids argue over whose night it is to have Brewer sleep with them.  When I check on them after they’re asleep, Brewer always seems to have the lion’s share of the bed – I think he’s under the impression that he’s a Great Dane with fantastic hair! He visited the vet at the first of the year to get his shots and they said he weighs 7.5 pounds and is in excellent health.  They also said that he’s their favorite kennel guest.  He does have allergies so we give him a daily dose of doggie-Benadryl to keep his eyes from watering.  He takes his pill very well – it helps that I put it in a little piece of cheddar cheese.  Boy, does he love cheese! A couple of weeks ago I took him to All 4 Paws for his first real haircut – he had a pesky mat on his back leg that I could not get out – he hates for me to brush his rump so I have to constantly be on the lookout for mats.  He looked great and I think he really enjoyed having shorter hair – especially since the temperature is rising.  In the first picture, he is sleeping with his ducky (his fave toy).  He loves to go for walks, chase bugs and play in mud puddles – that last one is always followed by a bath which is still NOT his favorite activity.  We are still working on getting him to walk on a leash – we switched to a harness so he’s more comfortable.  I am constantly complimented on how well behaved and friendly he is – and I always give credit to his fantastic foster parents.

Had to send you pics of the babies!  They are doing so great!  Spoiled rotten, but that's okay.  I took them up to school this morning while the maid service was here and they had the best time playing in the vacant nurse's office.  Everyone says they are ADORABLE!!  Their personalities are sooooo different.  Hersheys is Mr. Social with people.  He just kisses and kisses everyone.  Reeses turns into a little mama's baby and likes mama to hold him with strangers around.  He warms up slowly.  They went to the vet this past week and got their second set of shots and are on the heartworm stuff and Frontline.  Reeses weighed 7 lbs and Hersheys weighed 4 1/2 lbs.  He is still ALL FUR!!!!

Did I ever tell you Mr T is the second best blessing in my life?  I love my little man so much and we have such a good time. He had his 1st birthday and got a little swimming pool. I put one to two inches of water in it and he loves it. He walks around in it like he is really doing something great and then hops out. He loves squeaky toys the best. We got his hair cut and it is growing out fast. Since he likes to play out side and we go a lot in the summer I think I will trim him once a year, but not close to the skin. We will see how it works out. I can’t believe how smart he is!  He listens to me talking and knows so many words it is amazing.

RustyRusty is going to be a spoiled rotten doggie!    Tom, the dad, will be taking Rusty for rides with him in his handicap motorscooter.  This couple is retired, so they can be with Rusty all day long. It is a perfect match!

PreciousPrecious2    Precious is doing well.  She was a BIG hit at my sister's Xmas party.  She was a green M&M at Christmas and is with Jude on New Year's Eve.

DillonDillon2I have no power when it comes to correcting Dillon.  When he raises the paw and gives me that look I immediately melt. He is loved very much and has been a great pal to Kessler.  Dillon came into our home and took it over lock, stock and barrel. He also protects us from the evils that lurk outside of the glass front door. We don't know what he thinks is out there but we will be safe nonetheless!

EddieThere's a few more things I want to tell you about Eddie. First of all, She has about ten toys that I put in a bowl that she plays with. When ever Billy and I are gone, and we get home, her toys are all over the house. But before we got to sleep, without fail, she'll collect every single one of them, and put them under the coffee table, which is her favorite place in the world. It's where she loves to chew her raw hide or treats. It's her little space.

Then, she has a little secret place she buries her bones... in one of my big
flower pots outside. She'll go out several times a day to make sure it's still there. It's so cute.

Also, she loves to have her belly rubbed. She tricks you into to it, though. She'll come up to you, then you pet her, then she'll roll over and you rub her head, then she takes her paws and pushes your hands down to her belly. It's hilarious.

She loves to kiss! (lick). Last night she came up to Frankie, and kissed him on the mouth! I don't think Frankie knew what to make of it. Frankie's ears pricked up, he plopped down, and then just stared at Eddie. Frankie's really starting to warm up to Eddie. There's been a cat lurking around the backyard, and Frankie saw Eddie run it off. I think she has a new found appreciation for her after that...

GrumblesGrumbles2Grumbles3

Grumbles is doing great! He's got a nice thick coat on him now and his tail is trying to catch up. He looks like a big poof ball now and we've already had to trim him up  a bit. He doesn't have the black dry skin he used to have either. I can't tell if the medication helped or not but he looks fine now.
He ripped up all his toys so we got him a real heavy duty rubber bone to play fetch and tug of war with. So far he hasn't been able to tear it up. He also has a pressed bone chew he likes a lot. He has gotten very lazy. If he drops his bone or toy off the couch or bed he'll just stare at it with a sad face expecting one of us to pick it up for him.
He doesn't especially like the cat except to chase her and they sleep on different sides of the bed, but the other day he got up from his side and laid down right next to her! She just looked at him like he was crazy and went back to sleep. He is usually very jealous of her. If I'm petting the cat he'll chase her away and lay on top of me even if he was doing something else.
He likes to be picked up now and I can even hold him like a baby. He's gotten to where he likes Justin better than me though. Whenever he comes home Grumbles is all over him wanting to play.
He's gotten used to Justin's parents' dogs since we visit often. They have two little chihuahuas and Grumbles doesn't seem to mind them much, but he still won't play with them. I don't think he'll ever get over his dog fear.
He has been a total sweetheart! Thanks so much for saving him!

ZeekieZeekie2Zeekie4

Hey all - we adopted a new little Pom from a really cool organization here in Dallas - Recycled Poms.  His new name is Zeekie and we are really in love with him.  He is about 4-5 years old - has only 5 teeth - was homeless and terribly matted so his coat had to be cut right down to the skin.  (Hence the shirt - He doesn't care that it is PINK - it was the only one I could find in his size.)  He is completely house broken and NOT a yapper!  We are very, very fortunate to have him!
